SOLAR TAX CREDIT

The solar tax credit is the best residential solar incentive available in Florida. It allows you to claim a federal tax credit worth 30% of your total installation costs, reducing what you owe to Uncle Sam.

Learn how it works and who qualifies in our complete guide to the federal solar tax credit.

How much you’ll save with the tax credit depends on your total installation costs. But it’s important to remember that this is a tax credit, not a refund or a cash payment. You’ll see your savings when you file your federal income taxes for the year you install your solar energy system.

Heads Up: The Solar Tax Credit Could Be Ending This Year

According to current law, the 30% solar tax credit will be available for residential solar panels installed by the end of 2032. But things could be changing soon. A new proposal aims to end the tax credit for all systems installed after December 31, 2025.

Florida Solar Property Tax Exemption

Installing solar panels can increase the value of your house, but it won’t increase your property taxes. The Florida Property Tax Abatement for Renewable Energy Property provides a 100% property tax exemption for residential solar energy systems.

Florida Solar Sales Tax Exemptions

You don’t have to pay sales tax on solar panels in Florida. Considering we pay a 6% sales tax on almost all purchases in Florida, this exemption can save you a significant amount of money on your solar installation.

You have to apply for this exemption, but we’ll handle the entire process for you.

Net metering is an agreement between you and your utility company.

How Net Metering Works

How Net Metering Works

Under a net metering agreement, your solar energy system will automatically export any excess power it generates to the electric grid. Your utility company credits you for the power you send to the grid, and you can use your credit to help pay for the electricity you buy from the grid when your solar panels are not producing power, like at night.

Net Metering Policies in Florida (2025)

The value of your net metering credits depends on where you live and your utility company. In Florida, all the big investor-owned utilities (Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy, Florida Public Utilities, and Tampa Electric Company) are required to pay you the full retail rate for the electricity you send to the grid.

If you have an electric cooperative or use a local electric utility company, full retail net metering may not be available to you. In this case, we recommend installing a solar battery. With a battery, you can store the extra solar power you generate during the day and use it to keep your essentials running at night so you don’t have to buy power from the grid.

Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

Florida businesses can claim a 30% federal tax credit for commercial solar panel installation. This credit is applied to your federal income tax liability, bringing down the amount you owe.

Bonus Tax Credits

There are three bonus credits available for commercial solar installations that can be claimed in addition to the ITC:

  1. Domestic Content Bonus – Projects that use a required percentage of US-manufactured steel, iron, and solar components qualify for a 10% bonus credit.
  2. Energy Community Bonus – Solar projects located in designated energy communities, such as brownfields and former coal regions, are eligible for a 10% bonus credit.
  3. Low-Income Bonus – Solar projects under 5 MW that provide equitable financial benefits in low-income communities, on Indian lands, or for qualified low-income residential buildings can receive a 10-20% bonus credit.

Direct Pay / Elective Pay for Non-Profits

Tax-exempt organizations can still take advantage of the federal tax credit! Eligible organizations can receive a direct payment worth 30% of their total solar installation costs in place of the solar tax credit.

Eligible organizations include:

  • Non-profits
  • Tax-exempt religious organizations
  • States, counties & municipalities
  • Public schools
  • Indian Tribal governments
  • Rural electric cooperatives,

Property Tax Exemption for Commercial Solar

All non-residential solar installations in Florida are eligible for a property tax exemption that covers 80% of the added value. Commercial, industrial, agricultural, and multi-family residential projects all qualify for this exemption.

Florida Sales Tax Exemption for Commercial Solar

There’s no sales tax on solar energy equipment in Florida, saving you at least 6% on your commercial solar installation.

Net Metering for Commercial Solar Projects

Net metering is one of the best solar energy incentives for commercial solar projects in Florida. With net metering, you can sell the excess electricity your solar system generates to your utility company. You get paid in credits that can be used to offset the cost of electricity you buy when your solar system is not producing power.

In Florida, all investor-owned utility companies (Florida Power & Light, Duke Energy, Florida Public Utilities, and Tampa Electric Company) are required to offer net metering for solar power systems under 2 MW, and pay the full retail rate for the electricity they buy from you.
